Memory Types and Speeds Explained
Memory is typically any form of electronic storage that is used to identify various temporary forms of storage quickly. There are different types of memory that are used to store different types of data. The most popular memory type is RAM (Random Access Memory). Types of RAM and speeds:
There are three main types of RAM used today-
• DRAM
• RDRAM
• Synchronous DRAM
DRAM:
Dynamic Random Access Memory is one of the most common types of RAM used in Personal computers. Random Access Memory typically means that the PC processor can access any part of the memory from anywhere, instead of accessing sequentially from some starting point. As the name itself implies, DRAM has its storage cells refreshed for every few seconds. It stores pieces of data in a storage cell that consists of a capacitor and a transistor. The asynchronous DRAM chips in modern systems have a rated speed on 50,60 or 70 nanoseconds ( a billionth of a second).
RDRAM:
Rambus Dynamic RAM ensures that all memory sockets of a channel are filled with a memory chip or a link module. It is often installed in pairs of the same type of memory chips.
SDRAM:
Synchronous DRAM has a synchronous interface and is synchronized with the system bus of the computer. It is actually a common name for several types of DRAM that are coordinated with the clock speed that the microprocessor is optimized for. It permits the chip to have a complicated pattern of operation rather than the asynchronous DRAM. The speed of SDRAM is rated in MHz rather than nanoseconds, so that comparing the bus speed and the Ram chip speed becomes very easy.

As it cannot be modified, it is ideal for storing data that does not require any modification. The speed of ROM is lesser than ROM, so ROM content is copied to RAM and then it is read from RAM.
Cache Memory:
Cache memory is a type of random access memory that can be accessed by the computer microprocessor more quickly than it can access the regular RAM. The CPU looks up in the cache memory before it starts searching in the central memory storage area to check whether the required information is there.
Flash memory:
It is a non volatile memory that helps to store and transfer data conveniently. You can erase and reprogram the data in the flash memory easily, as per your requirements.
