Speed Network

Network types and speeds:

A computer network allows group of computers to connect and communicate with one another. It helps to share resources and devices like printers and scanners. There are several network types and they are typically categorized by the systems that are under the networked area.  Local Area Network and Wide Area Network are most common types of networks.

Local Area Network (LAN):

LAN connects network devices within a short distance, for instance, within a school or office building. The computer systems are linked with cables under this type of network. The connected devices share the resources of a single processor or server here. Generally, the server has applications and data storage that are shared by multiple users.

The speed of the Local Area Network is usually 100Mbps. It can go anywhere from five computers to several hundreds. However, if more computers are connected to a single LAN, it would slow down the connection. LAN utilizes several technologies like Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface).

* Ethernet is the most commonly used LAN technology. Ethernet LAN uses Coaxial Cable or special grades of twisted pair wires. The widely used Ethernet system 10BASE-T provides speed of transmission up to 10 Mbps. Fast Ethernet offers transmission speeds up to 100 Mbps. Gigabit Ethernet offers higher level of transmission speed (1000 Mbps)

* Token Ring is a network that connects computer in either ring or star topology. It utilizes a unique scheme to prevent data collision between two computers called token passing scheme. It provides transmission speeds of 4 to 16 Mbps.

* FDDI is used to transmit data via fiber optic lines. It can be extended up to 200 Kilometers. As it can connect computers in a large area, it can support thousands of users. It employs two token rings and the main ring offers up to 100 Mbps capacity. The secondary ring can carry data and extend the transmission capacity t0 200Mbps.
Wireless LAN is used to connect a user to a local area network via wireless connection. It provides connection to the internet through an access point. There are three types of wireless Local Area Network- Peer to peer, bridge and Wireless distribution system.

1. Peer to Peer network lets the wireless devices communicate directly with each other.

2. Bridge is used to connect different types of networks.

3. Wireless distribution system allows the wireless interconnection of access points, which can be main, relay or remote base station.

Wide Area Network:

WAN is a computer network that covers a broad area. Internet is the largest WAN that spans the Earth. It requires high speed connection usually fiber optics. A T$ connection can provide a speed ranging from 1 to 4 Mbps. It can connect LANs and other types of networks, so that the users and computers in one area can communicate with the users and computers in another area.

Reboot Computer

What Happens When I Reboot My Computer?

Rebooting your computer basically means restarting your computer and reloading the Operating system. If you need to install a new software or hardware, then rebooting your computer is essential. Sometimes, some applications may not respond, you need to reboot your computer. You can reboot your system by choosing “turn off computer” from the start menu. You can also select the Ctrl-Alt-delete to reboot your computer.

You may like to know what happens when you reboot your computer. Rebooting your computer triggers a reset line. It tells the computer to re-start. You can reboot your computer by selecting the “restart” option. This lets the computer shut down all the processes before resetting.

1.  Rebooting using recovery disks:

If you reboot your computer with the help of recovery disks, you can completely reset the system.  As you may lose all the information on the hard drive, you need to store them on a CD/DVD or in an external hard drive. Nevertheless, make sure whether any of the files you want to store is infected. Rebooting can make your system devoid of everything other than what is stored on the recovery disks. Hence, you need to download and reinstall all your previous programs. When you computer restarts, the screen should look similar to the set of your computer when you got it first.

2.  Cold or hardware boot:

If your computer needs to turn off entirely, then cold or hardware boot is required. You can trigger a cold boot in the Windows Operating System by clicking your start button. You need to select either “shut down” or “turn off” option to trigger a cold boot. This helps to run the processes and then complete a refined shutdown. You can also press the power switch to trigger cold boot. You need to press and hold the power switch until the computer shuts off. However, this option does not offer a refined shutdown.

After pressing the power switch, you need to keep your computer off for thirty seconds. This allows the electrical charge in the system to drain completely. This in turn lets the RAM clear properly. This is important, when you are cold booting your system. Clearing RAM also helps to lessen the strain on some of the hardware components of your system.

3.  What happens when you reboot your computer unintended?

If you reboot your computer unintended, your monitor goes dark and then you can see the usual startup routine of your computer. Unintended reboots may be caused by an electrical discharge near the computer or by power cut.

You need not worry about unintended reboot, because it is not a source for apprehension. However, if you experience unintended reboot regularly, then there may be some problems in your computer.

Memory Speed

Memory Types and Speeds Explained

Memory is typically any form of electronic storage that is used to identify various temporary forms of storage quickly. There are different types of memory that are used to store different types of data. The most popular memory type is RAM (Random Access Memory). The data goes to RAM first, regardless of the type of input device used. The CPU then stores parts of data that it would require to access in a cache and maintains detailed instructions in the register.

Types of RAM and speeds:

There are three main types of RAM used today-

           DRAM

           RDRAM

           Synchronous DRAM

DRAM:

Dynamic Random Access Memory is one of the most common types of RAM used in Personal computers. Random Access Memory typically means that the PC processor can access any part of the memory from anywhere, instead of accessing sequentially from some starting point. As the name itself implies, DRAM  has its storage cells refreshed for every few seconds. It stores pieces of data in a storage cell that consists of a capacitor and a transistor. The asynchronous DRAM chips in modern systems have a rated speed on 50,60 or 70 nanoseconds ( a billionth of a second).

RDRAM:

Rambus Dynamic RAM ensures that all memory sockets of a channel are filled with a memory chip or a link module. It is often installed in pairs of the same type of memory chips.

SDRAM:

Synchronous DRAM has a synchronous interface and is synchronized with the system bus of the computer. It is actually a common name for several types of DRAM that are coordinated with the clock speed that the microprocessor is optimized for. It permits the chip to have a complicated pattern of operation rather than the asynchronous DRAM. The speed of SDRAM is rated in MHz rather than nanoseconds, so that comparing the bus speed and the Ram chip speed becomes very easy.

Apart from Random Access Memory, Read Only Memory (ROM), Cache, hard drive and flash memory are used for storing data. Read Only Memory is a storage media used to distribute firmware. As it cannot be modified, it is ideal for storing data that does not require any modification. The speed of ROM is lesser than ROM, so ROM content is copied to RAM and then it is read from RAM.

Cache Memory:

Cache memory is a type of random access memory that can be accessed by the computer microprocessor more quickly than it can access the regular RAM. The CPU looks up in the cache memory before it starts searching in the central memory storage area to check whether the required information is there.

Flash memory:

It is a non volatile memory that helps to store and transfer data conveniently. You can erase and reprogram the data in the flash memory easily, as per your requirements.

Memory speed is an important aspect if you wish to successfully speed computer up.

Offsite Backup Solutions

Importance of Backups

No person whom uses a computer should ignore the importance of backups. It is an essential, if not an unavoidable part, of any regular computer activities. If you are a regular computer user, you must keep a backup of all your works at regular intervals. Since every piece of data is vital for you and the loss of data can be very crucial, importance of backups cannot be ignored.

The risk of your PC getting infected with different kinds of harmful viruses and other malwares has increased in recent years which can harm your system. Therefore, the importance of backups has increased many times over. Once your data has been backed up, the process with which you can retrieve your lost data becomes very easy.

Reasons for loss of data:

There are a number of reasons why you could experience data or file loss and sometimes these may be unavoidable and cannot be controlled.  Human error and system failure are the two most important reasons for data or file loss. Once any of these two factors have been experienced you soon realise the importance of backups. One single wrong entry is sufficient to make you suffer from data or file loss. On the other hand, system failure is absolutely unpredictable and gives you no chance to save any data or file. Only frequent backups of important files or data can save you from a possible setback.

Hard disk failure is another reason that can cause loss of data. Hard disk failure can happen at any time without giving you any alerts.  It may occur at a time when you are in a very urgent need of specific data and possibly, you are working on it. The importance of backups increases astronomically as it saves you from all such mishaps where loss of data and files is inevitable. You must try to understand the importance of backups just to save yourself from these harrowing moments.

After-effects of the problem:

The importance of backups becomes more relevant if you consider what would happen if your data is lost due to any unforeseen reason. The aftermath of such an unfortunate disaster, when the potential problem is analysed, increases the need to appreciate the importance of backups. If you are not in the habit of saving your data or files, then start developing it now, make it habit. Gradually, you will develop the disbelief that previously you did not appreciate the importance of backups.

Loss of any file or data can be avoided if you maintain an awareness of importance of backups and thus you can easily retrieve the lost data or file at any time that situation rears its head. Its easy because at the end of the day, the backup of these files is nothing but a duplicate copy of the files.

The importance of backups cannot be denied as it helps you work comfortably. You will feel more relaxed, as you do not need to concern yourself with the disaster that is loss of any data.

Solution:

To avoid such situations, you must practice backing up your data on a regular basis. You can store your data on small removable media CDs or thumb drives. By using backup software easily available over the internet, you can make a duplicate copy of your files, which you can retrieve later on quite comfortably and easily.  Remote backup software is also a very good option for making backup copies of your files.

Every computer user must fully appreciate the importance of backups. Only when you implement a backup regimen will you make your computer experience run more smoothly over a long worry free period of time.
